Iron bar

UEFA UEFA CUP 1989 - 1990 1st round (a):
Ajax - Austria Wien, 1 - 1. De Meer, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1989-09-27

De Meer was an old stadium and one Ajax fan had found an iron bar lying around and thought it would come in handy during the match. Maybe hit someone with it.

but
But he didn't hit anyone with it, instead he threw it at the Austria keeper Franz Wohlfart. It was already in the extra time and Galler abandoned the match. Ajax got a two year international ban (came back to one year), the guy, then 17, got a 5 month's sentence and a large fine. Austria Wien got three points.

Kurt Waldheim
Around that time it became known that the president of Austria, former United Nations boss Kurt Waldheim, had been a Nazi during WWII (look it up, he was a nasty character). Having Austrians visiting the stadium was something the stadium speaker, a comedian called Freek de Jonge, couldn't let lie and at the start of the second half he called out: "There's a call for a Mr Waldheim, can Mr Waldheim please phone Mr Wiesenthal". (Simon Wiesenthal, the famous Austrian Nazi hunter).

old
De Meer was demolished and Ajax got a new stadium and never had a large success since, the fan who threw the bar said he was sorry but he blames Ajax for having iron bars lying around. The comedian - who also tried to keep the Dutch national team from going to the 1978 World Cup in Videla's Argentina - grew old, and boring.
