Bjorn Kuipers

A son of a referee, Bjorn Kuipers decided early in his life to become a referee as well. In 2006, at the age of 33, Kuipers received his FIFA badge. Kuipers became an elite category ref as of June 2009.

Kuipers took charge of the final of the 2006 u17 European Championships. Almost always a good sign for a ref when that happens in his first year.
Then in 2009 he got the final of the European u21 tournament. He was an elite ref by then.

Kuipers took charge of a semi-final at the 2010 Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Euro 2012
Kuipers is selected for Euro 2012.

When it got known that Kuipers was invited to officiate the 2011 European Super Cup, the Dutch sports journalists took turns attacking him. Never happy with the national referees and always ready with the same regional conspiracy theories, they knew the only reason why Kuipers got the job: he was from the same province as UEFA referee VIP Jaap Uilenberg. A theory (if you live somewhere near someone you are more likely to do him a favour) that never seems to count for people coming from the more densely populated Randstad where almost everybody else is from.
What did seem a bit strange was the fact that Kuipers didn't have a very good average for 2010-2011 and that he hadn't been assigned any top-matches - was the Ducth FA afraid he would make mistakes? Kuipers even started season 2011-2012 with a match in the second division.

Bjorn Kuipers is assigned the final of the Confederations Cup. You can read a short interview on the subject with him here.

Bjorn Kuipers was selected for the WorldCup 2014 in Brazil in which he officiated three matches. He was regarded as one of the best referees active at this tournament.

Björn Kuipers has been been appointed to take charge of EURO 2016.
