Robert Valentine was an important referee in the 80's. Two matches in the 1982 World Cup, many Champions League matches and one group stage match in the 1984 and 1988 European Championships.

boring
When West-Germany faced Austria in the their last group stage match of the 1982 World Cup, both teams would go on to the next stage if Austria didn't win and if Germany wouldn't score more than one goal. And that was what happened: both teams just passed the ball, there was one goal and that was it. It was all very obvious, but still all players denied allegations of having made a deal. The match was extremely boring and referee Bob Valentine could have stayed in his hotel.
