Sure, Pierluigi Pairetto has been an international referee, and even a good one. The youngest to officiate in the Serie A. He officiated the Euro 1996 final for instance and a match at the 1994 World Cup. But that was then. Pairetto became really famous when the Italian police decided to tap Luciano Moggi's phone.

A good job
When Pierluigi Pairetto (a vet by trade) retired from refereeing he became the vice chairman of the UEFA Referees Committee and the person to appoint referees for Italian Serie A matches. A good job so it seemed because Pairetto made some money on the side by letting Luciano Moggi decide which referees to appoint for certain matches. Moggi used to work for Juventus. Pairetto even manged to get (probably bent, Urs Meier was named) referees for European matches.

ban
Pairetto was banned from football for 3,5 years. He could be back in 2010.
