Ben Haverkort was a defensive player for more than 16 years before he became a referee.

Ajax
Born in the neighbourhood De Pijp in Amsterdam Haverkort started out as a youth player for Ajax. He went on to play for teams called Cambuur and Emmen, all in the Dutch Eerste Divisie, the one league under the highest Eredivisie.
As a player he collected 73 yellow and 6 red cards, he was even suspended for 6 months in his last year as a player. Most bookings were for talking to the ref, even abusing him.

When he stopped playing in 1995 a friend showed him an ad in a football magazine offering a short quick referee course. In 1999 Haverkort took charge of his first national match and 3 years later he got his FIFA Badge. Haverkort retired internationally in 2006 having reached the age of 45.

still
When interviewed in 2008 Haverkort said he still talked too much on the field.
