Mohamed Benouza

2010-05-29

Algerians expected their best referee to represent Africa at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but since he was still young and had a whole career in front of him, older referees were sent by the African Confederation. His selection for the 2010 World Cup did not come as a surprise.

CAF
Mohamed Benouza was active at the African Cup of Nations 2006 (only one match, though) in Egypt, in 2008 in Ghana and in 2010 in Angola.

u-20's
Mohamed Benouza was selected to officiate at the World Cup u-20 in the United Arab Emirates 2003, in Canada 2007 and in Nigeria 2009.

CL
Benouza also lead the CAF Champions League final 2004 between l´ES Sahel from Tunisia and Enyimba from Nigeria.

South Africa
After Mohamed Benouza was selected for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa he said: "I am pleased to represent the Arab world in the games and I'd be a worthy ambassador of Algeria". He is the first Algerian referee in 20 years to be active at a World Cup. His average of 4.25 yellow bookings per match is not low, not high. If he does not make any major mistakes, the chances are he will be selected again in 2014.

but
Just prior to departure for South Africa FIFA announced that one or two of his assistant referees did not pass the fitness tests, therefor his selection for the World Cup 2010 was withdrawn.
