As a young referee Robert Styles thought George Courtney was the best referee, because Courtney made it to the World Cup in 1986 and 1990. More recently he would say that Philip Don and David Ellery are the top two referees.

There is an on-line petition for getting Robert Styles removed from the referee's list "for the sake of football's own good".

According to Robert Styles "the best referees have what I call moral courage and an unflappable sense of what is right and wrong. All the top referees may have different ways but they all have these qualities".

According to the Guardian Styles usually keeps the game flowing but "can snap like a croupier on speed to deal the cards".

Rob Styles was banned for one match in 2007 after he had awarded a dubious penalty to Chelsea in a match against Liverpool. He also showed a second yellow card to Essien without sending him off. Styles said he didn't show the card to Essien, but still had it in his hands, after showing it to John Terry, when he indicated a free kick.
Styles later apologized to Liverpool's manager Benitez.
