Dutch top referee Jan Wegereef started in 1980 as a referee and officiated his first match on the highest level (Eredivisie) in 1989.

come
Wegereef got his FIFA badge in 1992, but stopped refereeing for a year and a half because he couldn't afford being away so often (stating he just didn't earn enough as a referee)

back
In 1995 he started again on an international level. From 2001 on Wegereef officiated in 19 Champions League matches and 1 or 2 matches Uefa Cup every year.

come
Wegereef had a chance to show his abilities in the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan/Korea, but after one match (Senegal - Urugay, 3 - 3) he wasn't asked again. Maybe the two penalties (one questionable at least) and - to be blunt - his inability to control the match were reasons for FIFA to send him home.

back
Maybe UEFA also lost it's faith in Wegereef as a referee after 2002, because he never got any further than the second round in the Champions League.
