Already 36 when he started his career as a referee, teacher Valentin Ivanov officiated his first international match two years later. But he was internationally active much earlier than that: having been to the 1994 World Cup as a linesman.

Among the international matches that were refereed by Ivanov are the Confederations Cup final in 2003, Champions League matches and three matches in the 2006 World Cup finalsb, before he was sent home by FIFA (see the did you know section for details).

2006 was his last year as an international referee, having reached the age of 45, but in 2007 he announced that he would finish his career in Russia as well.
