The 1995 FA Cup final referee Gerald Ashby started as a linesman in 1982.
He became a Football League ref in 1985 and joined the newly formed Premier League in 1992. That was also the year he got his FIFA badge. Being 42 already he had only 3 years on the international panel.

Ashby's final match was in 1998. After his retirement he became a referees' coach, one of the refs he coached was Graham Poll.
Ashby was a match assesor and nominated by UEFA as a match delegate, which he was for one match before his untimely death of a stroke in 2002.
