Otherwise known as Tommy Thompson. Tommy was the youngest ever FA Cup final referee (aged 37yrs) at the time.

FA final
Thompson officiated this FA Cup final in 1939 at the Empire Stadium Wembley. The finalists were Portsmouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Portsmouth won and because the next final wasn't played again until 1946 consequently Portsmouth supporters were able to claim they had held the cup for the longest period.

Thompson was described at the time by the Arsenal manager George Allison as the perfect referee.

Tommy Thompson used to work in the offices of what is now Aviva but was then part of Norwich Union in Newcastle Upon Tyne. There is an entry about Tommy's exploits in the Aviva Archives and in the Northumberland FA records.
