Herbert Fandel

In 1979, when he was 14, Herbert Fandel passed his referee examns and started his climb up the ladder, up towards the First Bundesliga in 1996 and a FIFA badge in 1998. He was a UEFA Elite Category referee until he retired internationally in 2009.

Alongside his refereeing job, Fandel also pursued a musical career. After a short time as a concert pianist, he chose to become a piano teacher. Currently he is a music school director.

Fandel also refereed in Euro U16 1998 (Scotland), Meridian Cup 1999 (South Africa), Euro U21 2000 (Slovakia), Olympic Games 2000 (Sydney) and Confederations Cup 2005 (Germany).
Fnadel is one of the few referees who got to take charge of both the UEFA Cup final (2006) and the Champions League final (2007). See his palmares

Fandel was selected for EURO 2008 in Austria/Switzerland where he took charge of 3 matches (2 group stage, 1 quarter final). He was not part of the 2006 World Cup finals. They were held in his own country and FIFA had decided to assign only one referee from the host country.

Fandel was voted Bundesliga referee of the year in 2000/2001 and 2004/2005.

2009
Early 2009 Fandel was slightly injured and did not officiate any international matches. And then in July, he retired. Later in an interview he said he realized it was time to stop.
