Another injured player turned referee. At 22 Joaquin Ramos Marcos took charge of his first match. Internationally the salmantino took charge of qualifiers and an occasional UEFA Cup match. He was elected Spanish ref of the year in 1989 and 1990 and held a FIFA badge between 1987 and 1992.

Ramos Marcos wrote two books (Memorias de un árbitro and La Ley del fútbol)
He started working as a radio commentator while he was still a referee and of course that gave some problems.
