Roter Heinzi

Heinz Fahnler became a referee in 1962 and in his first years in Austrian highest leagues he was called Roter Heinzi (red Heinzi) due to many expulsions of football players in his matches.

Fahnler was a referee from 1962 till 1984, in all eleven years as an international. He refereed more than 1200 matches nationally and 45 internationally. Fahner took charge of the match Portugal vs Romania on Juni 20th, 1984 (Stade La Beaujoire, Nantes) at European Championships in France.

Wiener Zeitung
From 1983 until 2000 Heinz Fahnler was editor of the Wiener Zeitung. He was an official in Vienna's referee organisation (a local organisation) and from 2002 until 2003 he was a member of the so-called Bundesliga-Kommission and he was responsible for assigning the referees for the matches oft he Bundesliga. Later he was responsible for security of stadions (deputy commissioner for questions of security in the Austrian Football Assocication) and in the summer 2008 he was the first prosecutor in the Bundesliga.

Heinz Fahnler died of a stroke on the streets of Madrid on september 17th 2008, a few hours before the match Real - Bate Borisov which he was going to attend as a UEFA delegate.
