Player, international referee, president of the Austrian FA, FIFA delegate, Hugo Meisl was an all round football man. But he is mostly known for having masterminded the Austrian national team of the 1930s: the Wunderteam.

Meisl took charge of 16 national team matches as referee, one match was in the 1912 Olympic tournament.

Hugo Meisl managed the Austrian national team from1912 till his death of a stroke in 1937. His team got to the semi finals of the Olympic Games (1936) and the World Cup (1938), both against Italy.
Meisl spoke German, Czech, English, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch and French and he is one of the founders of the Mitropa Cup, the first European tournament for teams.

Meisl was born in 1881 in Moleschau, Bohemia. His parents were upper class Jews. The family moved to Vienna when Hugo was 12. There he went to a business academy and played for Wiener Amateure. Meisl died in 1937.
