According to Frank de Bleeckere Oscar Ruiz is a really funny guy who does great imitations of his colleague referees. He did so after a dinner and karaoke in South Africa 2010.

In May 2007 Óscar Julián Ruiz was the referee who officiated most matches under the flag of the South American Football Confederation: 101. Among the matches were 54 in the Copa Libertadores and 9 in the Copa America. His record will be hard to beat considering the fact that number two is Horacio Elizondo (97 matches) and he stopped in 2006.

Oscar Ruiz is a lawyer and he teaches at a university.

In 2010, the Colombian referee's association named Oscar Ruiz the best Colombian referee ever.

Don't ever call a lawyer names. In 2007 Oscar Ruiz sued Carlos Valderama, then assistant of a team called Júnior Barranquilla, after he had called him a thief and was seen waving a note of 50.000 pesos implying Ruiz had been bought. Valderama off course is the formerly famous player with the erupting volcano on his head.
