Cars and money

2010-07-01

In 1987 Emilio Carlos Guruceta Muro crashed his BMW into a truck on the road between Lerida and Zaragoza. Guruceta Muro and his assistant Eduardo Vidal died, another assistant survived the accident.

Money
Guruceta Muro had been in a car accident before in 1978 in which the other car driver died. But mostly Guruceta is known for having been paid to fix the 1984 UEFA Cup semi final Anderlecht - Nottingham Forest.

It was Anderlecht president (and Flemish man of the century) Constant Vanden Stock, who - after some convincing by his club's referee liaison - put up the money for Guruceta Muro to help Anderlecht win. The 1 million Belgian francs first went to a local gangster who paid the Spanish referee and who also recorded everything and for years blackmailed the Anderlecht president.
The Brussels side had lost the first leg 2 - 0 and didn't stand a chance of coming back. But Guruceta Muro had financial problems with some real estate and the Belgian referee liaison seemed to know that.
Anderlecht scored, got a penalty and a Nottingham goal was canceled by the ref. A few minutes before the end Anderlecht scored again and went on to lose the final against the Spurs.
