A semi-final in the 1970 World Cup, the final of the 1968 European Championships, the final of the 1969 European Cup, and many more important matches, but when you are a Liverpool fan there is only one match you'd remember him by: the 1965 semi-final of the European Cup against inter.

a fix?
The first inter goal was supposed to come from an indirect free-kick. The second, stealing the ball from the goalie who walks bouncing it, was allowed in those days. And then a goal by Liverpool was disallowed.
Inter was known for match fixing in the 1960s, people had been arrested, an assistant ref appeared in the news telling he had been offered a large amount to fix the European Cup final in 1964. Whether Ortiz de Mendebil was bought, is never proven.

Tommy Smith
Liverpool player Tommy Smith went after referee Ortiz de Mendebil, yelled at him and even kicked him in the ankle, but he wasn't red carded or even cautioned.
Tommy Smith in the Telegraph:
"At the final whistle I went berserk. I chased this Spanish ref screaming "El Bastido" at him, calling him a cheat. A bottle was thrown from the crowd aimed at me but smashed between us, he didn't flinch; I kicked him in the ankle, he didn't flinch. That was when I thought 'he's been got at.' I get so angry just thinking about it."
