Sandor Puhl (Hungary, 14th july 1955) is a retired football referee
Today he is a referee instructor and observer for UEFA. His last match was a friendly between Italy and England in Stadio Delle Alpi Torina, November 2000. He took charge of the finals of the World Cup, Champions League and UEFA Cup.

Long history
Hungarian referee Puhl earned his FIFA badge in 1989.
He took charge of 1 match in EURO 1992 in Sweden: England-France 0-0.
Puhl was also the man in charge in the 1993 edition of UEFA Cup's first final between BV Borussia Dortmund and Juventus (1-3) in the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund on May 5.

1994 World Cup
Sandor Puhl was the big man in the World Cup 1994 in the USA. He took charge of 4 matches including the final.
Washington was the place of his first match on the 19th of June: Norway - Mexico (1-0)
On the 28th of June Puhl took charge of Brazil - Sweden (1-1).
After the groupstage, Puhl got another nice match in the quarter finals: Italy-Spain in Boston (2-1) and he must have been surprised when he was chosen to do the final, in Los Angeles on July 17.
Italy vs Brazil ended in 0-0 AET and 3-2 after penalties.

1995 Champions League
In 1995 Sandor Puhl was the referee in the semi-finals of the Champions League second match Ajax - Bayern Munich, in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium.
In Munich the game had ended in a goalless, but in Amsterdam the Dutch made us see who were better: 5-2 after 90 minutes. During the break famous Dutch entertainer Andre Rieu played an Austrian walz.
In the second half Puhl made an controversial decision by not sending off Dutch defender Danny Blind. Blind touched the ball clearly with his arm, in the penalty area. By doing this he managed to prevent a goal, Puhl decided to show a yellow card.

EURO 1996 England
In 1996 European Championship in England Puhl also refereed 2 matches. In the first round he was the referee in the match Portugal - Turkey and in the semi-finals he was the man in charge of England - Germany.

1997
In Early 1997 Puhl was the referee in a very important WC qualifier England-Italy (0-1).
Also in 1997 Puhl took charge of the Champions League Final.

Suspended
In december 1997 Puhl was suspended by UEFA for the rest of the season due to his performance in a European Champions League match between Feyenoord and Manchester United. UEFA said he "Failed to inflict the appropriate sanction" after Feyenoord sider Paul Bosvelt felled Irish Defender Dennis Irwin with a kick to the knee during the match in Rotterdam on November 5th, 1997.
It was noticed he had seen the incident but failed to take any action beyond awarding a free kick and he did not even mention it in his match report.
