As the referee chief since 2004, Marc Batta came under fire early 2008 when no French referee was selected for an important tournament like EURO 2008. It was the first time in 30 years. Suddenly team managers and players and journalist started complaining about the quality of refereeing in the French Ligue 1. Referees were arrogant and lazy, everybody said and Marc Batta was responsible.

It was different when Batta was a referee. Taking charge of his first match when he was 17 and when he retired from FIFA in 1998 he must have done about 130 international matches. The most important were the UEFA Cup final in 1997, two matches in the 1998 World Cup and two in Euro 1996.
