Durkin was England's referee at the 1998 FIFA World Cup Finals in France. He only refereed one match - the group match between Italy and Austria. Dunkin retired in 2004

Also in 1998 Durkin refereed the FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Newcastle United. In 2003 he was selected for the League Cup Final between Liverpool and Manchester United.
During the Euro 1996 match France - Bulgaria, he replaced Dermot Gallagher after 28 minutes.

World Cup
Later Durkin told Graham Poll he didn't do well in that one match. He wasn't professional and lost his temper a few times.
