Rubén Selman was born in 1963, started refereeing at his 20s in the Chilean minor divisions and only in the 1990 decade he started in the 1st division. In 1998 he got his FIFA badge and appeared in CONMEBOL tournaments. He refereed in Copa Libertadores, Copa Mercosur, Copa Sudamericana and also international friendlies and World Cup preliminaries.

Polemic
He´s deffinitely a polemic referee. He has a severe expression and a controversial style, and tends to use the direct red frequently, which irritates players and coaches as well as the press. He has said that he likes to 'keep the game under control from the beginning', but his style has brought problems to him. Powerful Chilean teams such as Colo Colo or Universidad Catolica have complaint about Selman more than once, but he has defended himself and got the support of the Chilean referees association. In spite of it, he´s considered as one of Chilean top-referees with Carlos Chandía.

Last year
He was 45 in July 2008, so that year was his last one in the international list.
