Tunisian referee nr 1 for a long time Mourad Daami had a somewhat controversial career.
He started refereeing in 1996 and some of the more important games he lead were in the African Nations Cup (2000 and 2002), the Sydney Olympics (2000), World Cup 2002 (Korea/Japan) and the 2005 Confederations Cup.

Barred

Mourad Daami was barred for one year from CAF (confederation of African Football) matches, because he tried to influence South African match officials. (see: did-you-know section). Later on he was installed again.

final

He was in charge of two African Cup of Nations Finals, Egypt-Ivory Coast in 2006 and Nigeria-Cameroon in 2000 and an African Champions League final.
His highest honour must have been his World Cup 2002 match between Mexico and Ecuador.

WORLD CUP

  • Mourad Daami once left his yellow card in his locker at half-time during an African Cup of Nations match (2000) between South-Africa and Ghana. He only noticed his mistake when he wanted to book a player.
  • The Tunesian referee was once banned for a year for trying to influence the decision of referee Robbie Williams of South Africa at the 2000 African Champions League final, played in Ghana between Hearts of Oak and the Tunisian club Esperance. Daami, who attended the match as a member of Esperance's delegation, entered the Williams' changing room and tried to persuade his colleague to call off the match because of rioting by spectators at National stadium in Accra. Esperance, stalling for an aggregate win, had sought to induce several stoppages during the match in order to get it abandoned and were also later sanctioned by CAF.
  • During the post-match penalty shoot out in the 2000 final Nigeria-Cameroon, Daami disallowed a goal by Nigerian Victor Ikpeba. Television repeats showed clearly that the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line before bouncing out. Cameroon won.
