In 2002 Lu Jun was the first Chinese referee at a World Cup match. In that match he sent off Croatia's Boris Zhivkovic, who thus has the honour to be the first player ever to be sent off by a Chinese referee in a World Cup match.

WC

In fact Lu Jun took charge of two matches in the 2002 World Cup, but also at a World Cup under 20, a Confederations Cup and the Olympic Games (see palmares for Lu Jun).

arrested

In 2010 news reached us Lu Jun was arrested (or taken for questioning whatever that means in China) for match fixing, the hero of integrity during the last scandal (he was nicknamed the "Golden Whistle") was picked up in March and is facing a possible death penalty (according to Al Jazeera). If that ever happens we from WorldReferee vow to never ever buy anything Chinese again.

sentenced

Lu Jun was finally sentenced to 5,5 years in prison for having been bribed.

THE FIRST

  • Considering the way the Chinese put last names first but Westerners don't and getting his name from Western sources, we have no idea whether his name (in our way) is Jun Lu or Lu Jun.
  • A blogger reported that he once sent off Zico's (Japanese National team coach) translator with a red card for translating something Zico had said.
