COME-BACK
- For a few hours Dutch referee Jan Wegereef held the record for most cards shown during a World Cup match: 12, until he was beaten on the very same day by Lopez Nieto who showed 16 cards and two reds. The Spaniard Lopez Nieto's record stood for four years until Valentin Ivanov broke it with 16 yellows and 4 red.
The fact that Wegereef in his match between Senegal and Uruguay, showed his first 4 cards in the first 3 minutes may still stand as some sort of a record. - After fans of the Rotterdam based club Feyenoord had made threats against his parents, Jan Wegereef asked the Dutch football association (KNVB) in 2002 to not assign him any more Feyenoord matches.
- In april 2010 the KNVB suspended Wegereef for the last two matches in the eredivisie, because he forgot to put a yellow booking of Ajax player De Zeeuw on the match report.
