Jim Finney, already designated for the 1971 European Cup final, suddenly had to end his career after a car crash.

career

Jim Finney entered the League in 1959 (until 1971) and took charge of the FA Cup final in 1964. He was a FIFA referee between 1962 and 1971. Finney, a Freemason, died in 2008.

  • Scotland and Austria had already played many friendlies against each other and often during such a friendly, hostilities broke out. The worst friendly probably was the one in 1963. Referee Finney sent off two Austrians and then decided to abandon the match in order to prevent worse things from happening.
