It came as a bit of a shock for everybody in Denmark (and himself), when it turned out Claus Bo Larsen, who did pass the fitness test and was on the long list of 44, was not selected to officiate at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. The same happened for Euro 2008, and again for WC 2010. The Danes must be very bad lobbyists. Larsen was a UEFA Elite Category referee until he retired at the end of 2010.

But
A shock indeed because Larsen was an experienced and respected referee, who also missed out on the Euro 2004 in Portugal. Since he earned his FIFA badge he did referee in Euro U16 1996 (Austria), then the World Youth Championship 1999 (Nigeria) and 2005 (Netherlands), the Olympic games 2004 (Athens) and many Champions League and UEFA Cup matches.
In 2008 he finally got a real match for his stature: the Super Cup. Well .....

cards
Claus Bo Larsen does not like showing red (nor yellow) and does not like awarding penalties. In over 50 matches (see the palmares section) he sent off only six players. 4 of them were in the same match: 2004 Olympic games group match Paraguay-Italy. Of the (only) 9 penalties, 4 were also in that match.
It's been hinted that in order to make a chance to get in on a big tournament he should have sent off some more players.

2010?
Claus Bo was on the 54 member shortlist of candidates for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but did not appear on the next list of 38. Not a shock anymore. You may think that the people at the Danish Football Association can't be very good lobbyists when in fact one of Denmark's great referees, Peter Mikkelsen, sits on the FIFA ref committee. Maybe it's a matter of reverse favoritism that could be a reason why Larsen won't be officiating at a World Cup finals, or maybe Mikkelsen and Larsen don't like each other. We at WorldReferee predicted a European final for him in 2010, his last year as a FIFA ref.
Hah! that too didn't happen.
