FIFA OLYMPIC GAMES 2012 1/2 final:
Canada (w) OT - USA (w) OT, 3 - 4. Old Trafford, Manchester, England, 2012-08-06

As a neutral I have to admit that this was the worst refereeing performance I have seen in many years.

Calls
3 crucial mistakes. 1) Missed penalty at min. 25’ when after an air pass inside USA penalty area Filigno (CAN) stopped the ball with her chest while being pulled by her shirt by Buehler (USA). Petersen didn’t have the best possible position in order to watch the situation clearly and gave a free kick for USA for handball which didn’t exist. 2) Missed penalty min. 52’ when 2 Canadian players (Filigno and Tancredi) block Wambach (USA) not letting her to reach the ball. The so-called ''sandwich’’ is a direct free kick according to the LOTG and inside the penalty area is a penalty. 3) Indirect Free-kick for USA. Erin McLeod (CAN) held the ball at her hands more than 10’’ inside the penalty area. Christina Petersen didn’t at first notice the infringement but she did give the free kick after Abby Wambach (USA) tells her about it. Technically the call is correct and could be given but it is unacceptable for a referee at this level to let the players tell her job. 4) Just after the indirect free-kick Petersen gives a penalty for USA when the ball after a shot by Rapinoe hits the hand of Nault (CAN). LOTG clearly states that for a handball to be given penalty 3 things must happen (at the same time): 1) the distance must be more the 1 meter 2) the handball must be deliberate (hand goes to the ball) and 3) the position of the hand must be un-natural. At the specific situation the 2nd option doesn’t exist. The player’s hand is still and the ball hits it. It isn’t a deliberate play so the penalty shouldn’t be given.

Assistants
Some mistakes but nothing important. One mistake at offside calls (AR1) and some missed fouls.
