The Bundesliga match on Friday, the 1st April 2011, will certainly go down in football history in Germany: it has been abandoned in the 88th minute by referee Deniz Aytekin when Schalke lead 2-0. Why? Because an idiot threw a full plastic cup in the assistant referee 2's neck.
The referee and his team
In charge of the action were four FIFA referees: Deniz Aytekin, Holger Henschel, Thorsten Schiffner and the only woman in Bundesliga, Bibiana Steinhaus. Apart from the rest of the referees Aytekin did well so far in this season, the logical consequence has been the promotion, i.e. getting the FIFA badge.
Many important and difficult calls
There were at least 5 really big decisions that should be mentioned: 1. In the third minute, Schalke's Baumjohann appeared freely in the penalty area in front of the goalkeeper, in the last moment a St.Pauli defender carted out his leg and probably touched Baumjohann who lost the balance. Aytekin did not whistle. Why not? Probably, because if he had whistled, he would have had to send the defender off. After 150 seconds, less referees would give a red card. Nonetheless, a clear mistake. 2.A goal for St.Pauli was not given by Thorsten Schiffner because a player irritated Manuel Neuer while being offside. A right decision. 3. Yellow-red against Kalla (St.Pauli), the defender was shown a yellow card early, the second card was also correct when stopping Farfán unfairly from behind. 4. Straight red card against Bartels (St.Pauli). A brutal tackle. No, it was not a tackle, it was a kick against Farfán again. Good decision. However, the main decision of the evening should follow..
Thorsten Schiffner was hit by a plastic cup and immediately slumped to the ground. After a few seconds Aytekin was at the sideline and looked for his wellbeing. Unfortunately, he was slightly dizzy and therefore not able to referee the match the last 5 minutes. The logical consequence: the match was abandoned by Aytekin. I hope that Schiffner will have no injuries and that he will feel well again. That does not belong to football, such an action. Hopefully, the idiot will be identified...The decision itself is to my mind correct and does correspond naturally with the rule. At the "green table", Schalke will certainly win the match with 3-0. If not, it would be a scandale when considering that they lead with two men more on the pitch with two goals..
