Big football nation against a mall country ,which has almost as many residents as Italy has football players, and that big country needed help from Martin Atkinson.
Lot's of good decisions, some not so good and one awful one. Start with the good ones. He handed the match very well, every card was right, advantage also good, and assistants were great (my favorites: Sharp and Kirkup). Penalty for Italy was also good, Montenegro player played with his hand above his head and deserved yellow. But his fouls decisions were not so good. He used his whistle too often, almost like Riley, and most of the light fouls went to the Italy side. Atkinson made a huge mistake when he didn't send off Cannavaro for a foul in a promising goal csituation. Cannavro didn't have any chance to play the ball, he was not the last player but Chiellini was more then 20 meters from that situation.
The match could have gone in another way if Montenegro had scored several minutes before Italy scored their second goal. Italy played their typical match, they scored and then they waited and counter-attacked for a second goal to finish the match. Montenegro have a good team and they could be a sensation in the next matches.
