For 80 minutes, Olympiakos Piräus was lurking for the deceisive counter attack like an alligator below the surface. Schalke had possession, dominated in midfield, but lacked inspiration and precision in the building-up in front of the goal. A lucky shot which seemed not completely unsaveable by the goalie sealed the fate of Olympiakos and sent Schalke through to the next round.
He let go and waved "Play on"...
For most of the match, Bjorn Kuipers let go most of the clumsy stuff in midfield, waved "Play on" and let the match flow to an extent that it was sometimes almost a bit too much. He could have booked more often but he refrained probably thinking that it was not quite worth it. He was lenient for most of the game and warned players before booking them (e.g. Draxler for a late tackle just after half time). The offside decisions were correct, his goodness wore out towards the end when he should have booked Farfan and Maniatis for their niggly interaction just before the final whistle. A penalty appeal for Olympiakos towards the end, but Matip played the ball before touching the foot of the Greek player - so okayish I guess.
No 9,8 just because of the name
It was alright (meaning above 7, but no 8,5 in my opinion because it was not a difficult match) and no 9,8 just because of the name. Experience showed, but Kuipers seems to remain on one level below the real top ranking European referees at the moment.
