Other Encounters

Well done, Damir

UEFA EURO 2012 group stage:
Sweden - England, 2 - 3. Olympiyskiy Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine, 2012-06-15

Atmosphere, pace, rhythm, end-to-end action, five goals - in short, a pulsating "Premier League" game. And the referee adjusted himself to the style of this encounter.

Referee and assistants
For a long time many of us, me among them, have been writing favourably about Mr. Skomina's refereeing abilities. Judging from this performance, there is no reason to change my opinion.
He doesn't look his age, but don't fool yourselves about it - he is 36 years old and very experienced on the international stage (FIFA referee since 2003). He is very determined, a bit too stern for my tastes: doesn't smile. A rare occasion of such happened in minute 30', but it was more a grimace than a whole-hearted smile. Otherwise, Mr. Skomina lets the game flow, and in this case there was no exception to this rule. Generally, this ref. is also well-positioned and even in this end-to-end match, he kept up with the pace.
The caveats include him avoiding the yellow card, when Carroll fouled heavily from behind (48'). Was it because Mr. Skomina tried to delay the flushing of cards as long as he could? Or was it just because Carroll was polite to him twice - hugging the referee in the first half to apologise for accidentally kicking the ball at him, and then, before starting the second half, thanking the ref. after he had handed the ball to Carroll for kick-off?
The second occasion for questions to be asked happened in minute 59'. The ball was raised from a Swedish free-kick into the English penalty-box when the scoreline was 1-1. Granquist pushed Carroll vehemently (two arms struck forward) when players rushed to the ball, Carroll stumbled "leaving the gate open" for Mellberg to come through and put his team in front. The English didn't complain - well, it was a "Premier League" game, and fouls like this one go unnoticed... The third incident to be mentioned is an opportunity to start dealing with the assistant referees. Minute 71'. Goalkeeper Hart looses control of a ball played back to him by a defender, the ball clearly crosses the goal-line for what should have been a corner-kick, but quickly by the goalie and the play goes on for a few seconds with no reaction from the referee. Then the whistle goes and the corner-kick is awarded. It seems to be that the young Mr. Zunic (29 years of age - the youngest official in the tournament) didn't raise his flag, and there was a late call from aar Vincic who was the closest to the scene.
For me Mr. Arhar is one of the best ars in Europe, and probably on the globe. His long partnership with Mr. Stancin as assistants to Mr. Skomina is a source of the Slovenian referee's development into his respected stature. Mr. Stancin is yet on the UEFA site, but has been replaced by Mr. Zunic because he hadn't passed the fitness test. But compliments to Mr. Arhar are one thing, critical assessment is another. In minute 63' Terry headed from close range, but Isaksson diverted the ball over the crossbar. What seemed to be a lucky escape for the Swedes turned into an English equalizer (2-2) from the corner-kick. But it was a real lucky escape for Mr. Arhar. When Terry headed the ball towards the goal, he was miles behind the Swedish defence, and as the ball was crossed to him from a short distance, it is almost improbable for him to be onside when the ball was kicked. The pace of events afterwards didn't allow for a replay which would enable tv viewers to decide the case. Thus providing Mr. Arhar with an escape route.

Amazing
Well, well, well... one can never assume how ignorant players are about the laws of the game. Dozens of years in the football world, many among them spent in an elite football club, the captaincy of the "mother of football", and yet no ability to distinguish between a direct and an indirect free-kick. In the dying minutes of the game, England were awarded an indirect free-kick deep inside the Swedish half. Steven Gerrard, captain of his national team went over to take. Instead of finding a way to pass/cross the ball to a colleague of his, he hit the ball hard directly at the Swedish goal. The ball went high over the crossbar. Had the ball been struck lower, would Isaksson have tried to divert/catch it, or would he have been smart/"brave" enough to let it through, knowing very well the referee would not allow the goal to stay but award a goal-kick?
