General assessment
A good ref with fair decisions, but not firm enough in his outer manner for a real clash in my opinion. Struggled in the second half in terms of controlling the discipline, but remained on top of things at the end.

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE 2011 - 2012 round of 32:
Schalke 04 - Plzen, 3 - 1. Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen, Germany, 2012-02-23

With a 1-0-lead in the back after seven minutes, this was supposed to be a piece of cake for Schalke. Of course, it wasn't. Their domination waned towards the middle of the first half where Pilsen was all over them but failed to score. Alan Kelly gave a very British display, got out a straight red and still looked a bit challenged in part two of the match.

There were the good bits...
Alan Kelly and his team had their great moments (disallowed Pilsen goal 24'', red card Pilsen 60'') where they got everything right. Almost all of the cards (Höger 23'' as opener, Pilar 46'', Limberski 58'', Sevinski 65'', Farfan 72'', Matip 78'', Rajtoral 100'', Berger 114'') were completely justified, the big calls were alright and the referee looked that he knew what he was doing. His movements were good, his gestures clear and he made no visible mistakes. But still, his policy worked only to a certain extent.

Where I have questions...
How come that a referee who gets almost everything right and shows enough cards still seems to struggle with the control of the match? I think this had to do with the fact that Kelly let go quite a lot in midfield of which some of the stuff was borderline and sometimes more. You give the players some space and they take more and more - I think that he was too generous in some phases of the second half. He looked weak when Limberski fouled for a clear yellow and still had a lot to say - there Kelly failed to make clear to him that the Plzen captain was on the verge to go off.
