UEFA EURO 2008 QUALIFIERS :
Netherlands - Romania, 0 - 0. De Kuip, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2007-03-24

Der Markus Merk, a Mark indeed, a symbol for experience, leadership and high standards of refereeing. Considered already for years as German "Schiedsrichter Eins"; outside Germany his experience is wide out spoken as well.

Merk moment
A remarkable and a typical Merk-moment before the game was the fact that he talked to the infamous Dutch Disgrace Robben. According to the “well informed (?)” commentator it was to let him know beforehand he would “not accept any pathetic air-diving or other sissy-crying acts” ( free interpretation by Antonio Forsteri ). Robben later declared that Merk told him to change his blue underwear into orange underwear (?!) Anyway, he stays The Dutch Disgrace ( A.F. ) and all referees should be warned for his behavior. Merk definitely is.

Topshape
During the game you could sense the respect of both the Dutch and Romanian squads, since they hardly objected to any of the decisions he made. Like in the first half the moment the Dutch refused the play the ball outside, when Goan, a Romanian tower of 6 feet and a few inches, was hit hard in the face and knocked off his feet. Merk showed no sympathy for the Romaniun soft hearted protests and with only one yellow card he was in control of the situation. In the second half he booked four times, but there were no complaints from both sides about his arbitrary decisions: we only can conclude he is still in topshape for top matches. Unfortunately the game itself was dreadful to watch and the very ill Dutch performance made this game a real bummer. So much for the Dutch…
