Zambia - Sudan, 3 - 0. Independence, Lusaka, Zambia, 1996-06-16
The Zambian team was dead, crashed with a military plane three years earlier and only two players, both playing in Denmark were left. The new team played Sudam in a qualifier for the World Cup and a large crowd had come to see them.
Stadium
A stadium built for the Independence day festivities thirty years earlier and very much in disrepair, many stands and structures still in the same temporary state as when they were erected. All the ingredients for a disaster were there: too many people, an old stadium, closed exits and a stampede. Nine people died and 78 were injured.
