Both Ecuador and Oscar Ruiz started out well and both lost it a bit at the end. For the Colombian referee this will not be the end of the tournament, but for Ecuador it may well be: this was THE match they should have won.
Seeing him perform it is not clear why the Colombian referee is the record holder of Conmebol matches. He runs very fast, he is always near the action, but he is not always right in his decisions. He books when he doesn't have to and doesn't book when maybe he should. This was a very fair match: the first time any one stayed lying on the field was after more than an hour of play. Maybe there should have been no cards at all in this match.
Both teams started this match as if they had no midfield: playing long balls and counter attacking to and fro. All this running resulting in three fast goals, a shot on the post and many misses. Ecuador should have won, having the best player (Mendez) and the fastest players (Tenorio, Valencia). But also the dumbest: goalie Elizaga, we've seen him in Germany and here he was again with the national flag painted on his cheek.
