| Paraguay | - | Brazil |
We saw an intense game, because of the Paraguayan team ... They played as if it was a final, against a pale Brazil. Obviously Larrionda was the best choice for this kind of World Cup preliminaries match. (I could be a bit biased, but really, he did a good job).
3 things
I could have missed something, but I found only 3 mistakes (I mean, mistakes, not very small things) in Larrionda´s work. He missed one clear foul against a Brazilian player near the area borderline, and later he conceded one free kick after a very doubtful action. I think he was whistling too often because during the first half the game turned a bit violent. Larrionda talked a bit, then showed a couple of cards, and it got calm.
Red
The referee was always near the actions, he correctly showed the red card to Paraguayan defender Verón after booking him twice. Larrionda controls everything and nobody complains about his decisions (Verón left the field without saying anything, which is very strange in South American football). He´s respected. He´s one of the the best, even when he doesn't have a brilliant day.
Leader
Paraguay won (Brazil was easily beaten, strange). Paraguay is the South American zone leader in World Cup 2010 Preliminaries. Brazil has some work to do, their own fans shouted against Brazilian coach Dunga in the Defensores del Chaco stadium.
