Almost a perfect game for Walter Lopez…

CONCACAF GOLD CUP 2015 1/4 finals:
Mexico - Costa Rica, 1 - 0. MetLife, East Rutherford, United States, 2015-07-19

Walter Lopez is not one of my favorite CONCACAF officials. I just never considered him as a good manager of a competitive game. I was a bit surprised when he got the assignment Mexico/Costa Rica game, especially after the group play where he handed out seven YC. I was assuming the worse since I have not seen the game. I was very surprised that after 120 minutes of play and 11 YC later, that I really did not have anything to complaint about. ..

Controll of the game
All 11 cards were well deserved and Walter Lopez had little choice but to issue the cards. The fouls were either tactical fouls or reckless with little regard to the potential injury of the opposing player. He was fit and made a decent job of being in good position to make the call. He was not always seeking the best angle as a result missed a couple of corners that he awarded as Goal Kicks, but overall a well controlled game. He did stay in touch with the players managing them to remain calm and advise them of what was to happen if they continued their style of play. Well done. The 113th minute he called a foul on Peralta and issued a YC. The announcers were calling for a RC since he did “scissor trapped” the opponents legs, but really it was not that bad. It did not appear to be sufficiently reckless to call for a RC. In fact, I think Peralta thought that he was getting a RC and his sigh of relief could be heard all around the Northern Hemisphere. However, in my opinion neither the game nor the player really needed a RC.

Then comes the last seconds of the extra time of the 2nd overtime period…
What was Walter Lopez thinking giving a penalty kick in the last seconds of the game? Maybe I should question his fitness and he was so tired that he could not think through the circumstances. If it is a Goal Kick, then the game is called and the players will decide the outcome with PKs. It was that close. Walter Lopez was not really in good position to make the call. It seemed to me that his view was blocked. He did consult his AR, but they also had several Costa Rican players in the “huddle”. They needed to make sure that the players were gone while they discussed the circumstances and hopefully under that circumstance they would have come up wit the right call, especially if you observed the body language of Peralta (that is a bit of an insult to injury). He was not looking for a penalty. He was a bit out of control when he tried to play a ball which he probably had no play on and it is possible that the defender did touch him, but it sure did not appear to be such that it interfered with his play. If it is a GK then the players will decide the outcome of the game. As it turned out Walter Lopez decided the game and further reinforced the reason why I do not like him as an official of a competitive soccer game.
