Other Encounters

Is this game more about CONCACAF or is it about Geiger?

CONCACAF GOLD CUP 2015 1/2 finals:
Panama - Mexico, 1 - 2. Atlanta, Atlanta, United States, 2015-07-22

First of all I am a bit surprised that CONCACAF would assign a US official to a Mexico/Panama contest when both Mexico and the US are in the semi-finals playing to be in the final. Then again, by game time US has already lost and will no longer be in the final. So, was this a last minute decision and CONCACAF had two different officials prepare for the game?

Now, about the game…
From the very start Panama came out to intimidate both the Mexican team and also the official. More of the latter, I think. Every call Geiger made that went against Panama or not totally to their thinking of the level of the foul they were in his face including pushing the official. Should Geiger at this time set the tone and YC the player that pokes, or pushes him, or does he think that he can manage this game? Was this his Moment of Truth? The 3rd minute of the game Geiger gives a YC for a Mexican player that give a slight elbow to the midsection of a defender that was crowding him on a corner kick. Of course Panama was demanding a RC. Twenty minutes later may have been Geiger’s Moment of Truth. Two players contested a header and the Panamanian player used his forearm as an intimidator when he made contact with the face of the Mexican player. From Geiger’s point of view he used a hard surface to a soft surface as a weapon and gave an immediate RC. I think if he would have had a better view he may have been better off with a YC since the previous occurrence he gave a YC.

Now for the big disruption of the game….
With only minutes to go in the game and Panama is leading 1-0, Mexico had a great attack going but Panamanian player made contact with the ball that went straight up in the air. The defender, with full sight of the ball landed on the ball and pushed it to is keeper. Geiger was in great position to make the call and it is now a penalty. At this point the Panamanian team came apart at the seams and went on for a 10 minute delay of the game.

And this is where CONCACAF did not manage the event…
Was it Geiger’s responsibility to take his crew off the field, or is it up to the management to resolve the issues. If this was a UEFA game I think it would have been resolved much better.
