| England | - | Paraguay |
Marco Rodriguez looked rather nervous and overauthoritative in this scrappy game. England's Peter Crouch seemed to bear the brunt of Marcos' wrong decisions, eventually ending up with a yellow card for protesting. Paraguay's Carlos Paredes on the other hand was able to make foul upon foul without much of a reaction from Rodriquez. At the end of the first half the referee showed his disgust at the fact that the players drank a lot during breaks. It was VERY hot on the pitch.
The match
Third minute: Own goal by Camara. Trying to head David Beckham's refined free-kick away he makes it end up in the back of the net. No way Paraguay's goalkeeper Villar could have saved that one. Minutes later Villar injures himself so badly, he has to be replaced. He will not play again this tournament. And that's about all that happens in this match. The heat apparently is too much for England. Their game gradually grinds down to a halt. The fans go very quiet. The Paraguayans try to take advantage in the second half, but, well... they don't.
