General assessment
Stood the test of a difficult game better than I expected. I had trouble spotting a line in terms of foul detection but in general positive performance.

Definitely different style than UEFA refs

FIFA WC 2018 group stage:
Germany - Mexico, 0 - 1. Luzhniki, Moscow, Russia, 2018-06-17

Worldcups are invaluable as they open up the view to a worldwide perspective - not only in footballing terms but also in refereeing. Alireza Faghani is not a new man in the center circle as the many reports on this site suggest, but for me it was a first. He has a completely different style than UEFA refs, but we'll come to that a little later.

More generous than at the last three World Cups
2006, 2010 and 2014 - many refs resorted to call every little contact to slow games down and to maintain control after FIFA told them than cards are only to be used in emergency. In this WC, we are back to a more generous approach which I like much better. Match flow seems to be more important than whistling absolutely everything. Faghani applied this rule in a frantic and chaotic beginning of the match where Germany was all over the place and Mexico pressed very hard pushing the limits quite far.

Foul detection
He let go quite a lot of borderline challenges in the first 20 minutes where a more assertive approach might have calmed things down a bit more. The Kroos incident after a quarter of an hour may serve as a prime example for the arbitrary judgement by the Iranian: The German got pushed from behind, fell down and - assuming that he would get a soft freekick - handled the ball. The ref gave a freekick not for the push but for handball. Kroos was not pleased and protested vividly against the decision, invaded the personal space of Faghani by approaching him who pushed Kroos away with both hands. This looked almost aggressive and not very professional. There were quite a few little things like this.

Two yellows for timewasting and a wrong throw-in
Faghani played some very good advantages but was very firm with little things - he cautioned two Mexicans for time wasting but missed a very clumsy challenge by the goalscorer on Kimmich in minute 40'' when a caution would have been mandatory for me. He corrected a false German throw-in and remained passive in terms of body language but was after 25 shaky first minutes in charge of the game. The yellow for Hummels was justified, the other caution for Muller was a bit softish (brief shirt-pulling) but he could have easily been booked for dissent before.

A word on the Germans...
The Germans were very sloppy in defending and even sloppier in the final third where almost no final pass or cross landed where it was supposed to go. There were a few softish penalty appeals on both sides but given the generous approach he had for the whole of the game and for both teams - not enough for me. Another positive thing was his fitness: He was fast, moved around nicely and had a better composure for the final 60 minutes in terms of man management. Not a perfect display, but a good performance in my opinion worthy of getting a second game later in the knockout stage of the tournament. A little early to announce him as the perfect match official for the final though.
