Tough and Interesting

FIFA WC 2014 QUALIFIERS - ASIA 4th round:
Iran - Korea Republic, 1 - 0. Azadi, Teheran, Iran, 2012-10-16

This was definitely not an easy match. Iran and Korea Republic are both contenders in the group and this made it tough for Bashir to officiate the match. We basically had everything in the match: Red card, Coach Ejection, and 2 penalty shouts from the Koreans.

First penalty shout
The first incident in the penalty area occurred in the 28th minute when the Korean player went down in the 6 yard box from a challenge from the Iranian Goalkeeper. Bashir was right to not give a penalty because even though the Goalkeeper did not get much of the ball, the contact wasn't enough for a penalty.

End of First Half
It was very unusual of such an experienced referee to end the first half while South Korea had an obvious Goalscoring Opportunity. Bashir blew the whistle for half time when the Koreans had delivered the corner and had a chance to score off of a rebound.

Second Penalty shout
The second shout for a penalty by the Koreans was even easier of a decision for Bashir and he was right to not give a penalty again.

Red Card to Masoud
The second caution to Masoud from Iran was correct. The challenge was a two footed tackle which was reckless and deserved a yellow card. Despite being in front of 100,000 Iranians, Bashir showed guts by making the right decision.

Iran Coach Ejected
The Iranian Head Coach Carlos Quieroz was ejected in the 80th minute which everyone saw coming. Quieroz showed many signs of dissent during the match and had to be talked to from Bashir at least twice, but the second time which was in the 58th minute, Bashir missed an elbow to the head of the Iranian player which angered the Coach. Since this had happened in front of the Iranian bench, the coach had the perfect view. The elbow itself did not deserve a red but certainly a yellow could have been given to manage the situation and calm the coach down.
