Last season, Manuel de Sousa (or Jorge Sousa, how he is mostly called in POR) only got one match in EL, although I was pretty convinced by his perfomance in Russia. He is an Elite Development referee, Paixao was demoted last time, perhaps this could be a chance for de Sousa to move up and I have to say that he showed a very good perfomance in a good match.
In the first half, he was invisible. He had a good authority, the players accepted his decisions and when you are in a stadium, as I was, it is nice to observe the communication between the officials. I am actually no fan of the additional assistant referees, but the foul detection in the box after e.g. corner kicks improved. He issued five yellow cards which were all right. The only thing one can criticize: he mostly played with the advantage rule, one or two times, it should have been a directly awarded free kick as it was a heavy foul and the respective player needed to be treated. There was one disallowed goal of Schalke (by José Ramalho), this was a totally wrong decision, it was 1 metre "non-offside", honestly speaking, it is a MUST that Ramalho sees that. And there was one move in the appointment: World Cup 2010 assistant referee 1 José Cardinal was replaced by the other WC AR, Bertino Míranda.
