"My goal is the World Cup", he once stated, and why not. For starters he officiated a qualifier for the UEFA Cup and one for Euro 2008 in 2007.
He moved up to 'UEFA premier development category referee' at the start of 2010 and to Elite in June 2011.
In April 2010, despite of being "only" premier development, Cakir was assigned a semi-final of the Europa League, and in September of the same year a CL group stage match. A reason may have been the bad performances of some elite category refs that year. Perhaps UEFA just wanted some fresh talent quickly.
Cakir and his colleague Firat Aydinus were the first professional referees in the Turkish Super League.
Cakir was selected for the 2011 World Cup u20.
Cakir handled matches at Euro 2012. He is currently (2013) active in the UEFA Champions League.
Cüneyt Cakir was selected for the WorldCup 2014 in Brazil in which he officiated three matches including the semi-final between Netherlands and Argentina.
Cüneyt çakir has been been appointed to take charge of EURO 2016.
