Enrico was born in a small village called Lelydorp. At an early age he got interested in refereeing. He is regarded to be very talented. Enrico took refereeing courses in the Netherlands at the academy of the late Ignace Van Swieten.
In 2007 Enrico Wijngaarde was voted best referee of the Caribbean and selected to officiate at the World CupU20 2007 in Canada, where he took charge of two matches (see his palmares)
Wijngaarde was on the 54 member shortlist of candidates for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Unlucky for him his name disappeared from the 38 candidate shortlist.
According to the Suriname site nospang.com, Wijngaarde was a candidate for the World Cup 2014. His employer, director of the harbour, had already given him time to train for it (apparently 6 hours per day). But the Surinam Ref's name did not appear on the short list of 52.
