Born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Sergio Fabián Pezzotta is an international top referee and one of the most severe referees in the AFA League. He tends to show red cards whenever the rules allow him to. He started refereeing in Argentina´s 1st division in 1999.
He used to be a CONMEBOL Elite Category referee until he retired in 2012 because of his age.
3 Superclasicos in Bombonera
Pezzotta has refereed 3 matches between Boca Juniors and River Plate, all of them in Boca´s Stadium, the famous "Bombonera". It´s curious that Boca didn't win any of them: 0-1 (2004); 1-1 (2006) and again 1-1 (2007). In all three matches, he did a good job.
1st Argentinian League Final
December 13th 2006 won´t be easily forgotten by Sergio Pezzotta. That day he refereed the first Argentinian Football League final, between Boca Juniors and Estudiantes de La Plata. The teams were tied for first, so they had to play a tie-breaker match to win the championship. Pezzotta was selected by the AFA to referee this final. Estudiantes won 2-1 and obtained the Championship.
Road to WC 2010?
Pezzotta´s dream is to be part of the Referee´s Staff in the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. He was on the 54 member shortlist but never made it to the final one.
At the end of 2008, the Argentinian Apertura tournament ended with 3 teams tied in the 1st position (Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and Tigre). Because of this, a "triangular tournament" between these three teams had to be played, in order to determine the new champion. Pezzotta was one of the three referees chosen to officiate in these finals: he was nominated to take charge of the last one, Boca Juniors-Tigre.
Sergio Pezzotta ended on top of WorldReferee's top 100 in 2009.
In 2011 he had on his charge the Copa Libertadores second leg final between Santos and Peñarol
