
Ruud Bossen started out as a football player. But after an injury, he decided to become a referee. Starting humbly as a youth referee he steadily climbed the referee ladder and received his FIFA badge in 2001. He retired internationally in 2008.

Bossen stayed in the lower regions of international football: qualifiers for UEFA Cup and CL, youth tournaments, one or two first round UEFA Cup matches a season. More important matches were a qualifier for the World Cup and one for the European Championship.
