
In a simple accident when he was 21, Dougal broke his back when slipping on ice. After he recovered, he was not able to play football anymore. A friend of his father, Joe Kelly, who had been a top referee in the sixties suggested him to pick up refereeing instead.
Experience
Stuart Dougal is one of Scotland's most experienced referees. He started refereing in 1986 and earned his FIFA badge in 1996.
He officiated the 2005 Scottish Cup Final .
Dougal was also active in the Euro U16 1996 (Austria) and in Euro 2004 (Portugal) and many qualifiers.
CL appearance
The 2nd group stage seems to be the highest he reached before he retired at the end of 2007.
