Benjamin Mervyn 'Sandy' Griffiths began refereeing locally in 1934. He was appointed linesman in the Football League in 1939 and became a real referee after the war.

Three world cups
Griffiths refereed the 1953 FA Cup Final and was active at the WC 1950, WC 1954 and WC 1958.

Too early
Sandy was active internationally from 1949 until 1958. He ended his domestic career in 1959. In January 1974 Benjamin Mervyn Griffiths died at the age of 65.
