Starting as a linesman in 1976 King was promoted referee in 1979.
At least since 1981 King was active internationally. He took charge of matches in the UEFA Cup tournament as well as qualifiers for European and World championships. King retired internationally in 1991.
At the end of season 1993-94 King retired nationally, a year before he was due to reach retirement age. There was quite some talk about King accepting vice girls from participating clubs on the eve of crucial European matches. A thing King later admitted, adding that he'd never let a team win because of it. He then was given a ten year ban from any involvement with football.
Trying to influence referees by offering them girls was a standard practice in the 1980s and 1990s and some say it still is. King was just the one who admitted to it. He is even known to have asked for a blonde before a match Norway- Soviet Union.
